Teesside International Airport can today (21 August) announce that two of its most popular routes are to be expanded as the airport continues to safely reintroduce services following its temporary closure due to the coronavirus.
Since flights to Aberdeen and Belfast resumed from Teesside Airport on 22 June both routes have been operating as single daily flights as part of the phased reopening of the airport. Due to a huge increase in demand local people will now be able to take advantage of a twice-daily service to both destinations.
From Monday 7 September the Aberdeen flights will depart twice a day on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with an additional connection running on Sundays. Belfast will take to the skies with a twice-daily service on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays alongside new weekend routes for leisure passengers.
The announcement of these extra connections comes just weeks after Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen revealed a new daily connection to Heathrow – its first flights to the UK’s biggest airport in more than a decade.
Starting on 14 September people from across Tees Valley will have quick and easy access to more than 180 destinations around the globe via one of the world’s best hub airports. As part of ongoing route development, the flight to London City is transitioning to Heathrow.
Teesside Airport has already announced Eastern Airways’ route to Cornwall Airport Newquay will now run all year round, and that single daily Monday to Friday flights to Southampton are set to take to the skies in September, with tickets available now starting at £79.99.
Mayor Houchen said: “When I brought our airport back into public ownership and saved it from closure, we were putting in place the building blocks to a brighter future through our 10-year Rescue Plan.
“While the impact of the coronavirus on the travel industry has been unprecedented, Teesside Airport is going from strength to strength and we are in a good position to grow further. There is no better example of this than Aberdeen and Belfast expanding to a twice daily route and securing a daily service to Heathrow.
“Our flight to London City reconnected our region to the capital by air for the first time in over a decade and the success of this route paved the way for our new Heathrow flight – a route people from across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool have been crying out for since I save our airport from closure. Our connection to Heathrow means local people can now connect with more than 180 locations in 84 countries across the world.”
Roger Hage, GM Commercial & Operations for Eastern Airways added: “Ensuring the right services and frequencies are offered as passenger confidence returns is essential so the major addition of London-Heathrow as Europe’s biggest worldwide hub, while adding to the Aberdeen and Belfast services and the return of the Southampton service all being in September, helps ensure the Tees Valley and wider North-East region through its local airport and Eastern Airways is better placed than ever to ensure economic recovery and accessibility is enhanced.”
The airport is in continued discussions with all of its airline partners over the reintroduction of services from Teesside Airport, with more announcements on the return of more flights expected in the coming weeks.
