A fond farewell has been paid to Teesside Airport’s popular groundsman after clocking up almost a quarter of a century of dedicated service.

Multi-skilled operative Graham Lowes is retiring after playing a hugely vital role carrying out essential work tending the airport’s grounds.

The 66-year-old’s role included grass-cutting, weed-killing and general grounds maintenance across the vast airport site.

The work is vital not just to keep the airport grounds looking their best for passengers – but more importantly to ensure the ongoing safety of flight operations.

And due to the importance of his work not interfering with airport traffic, Graham began each daily shift at 3.30am.

Graham, from Darlington, began his airport career in 2001, also working for a period as a baggage handler alongside his groundsman duties.

Graham said: “I have loved doing this job. There’s nothing better than being outside on a summer’s day. I first worked as a farmer before this so have always loved being outdoors.

“I have seen a lot of change at the airport and it has been great to see all the positive things that have happened in the last few years. I will miss the people most of all as I have worked with lots of staff over the years and they are a great team.”

Graham is now looking forward to his retirement, spending more time with his family, including his six grandchildren and two dogs.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Graham has shown incredible dedication to Teesside Airport and I would like to thank him for the years of hard work he has put in to ensure this airport is a success – it is hugely appreciated.

“The early starts and countless hours spent keeping the grounds safe and well-tended have been invaluable to the airport operations.

“Graham is a fantastic example of the work our airport team put in to make Teesside Airport the best airport in the UK and I wish him the very best in his retirement.”

Ian Wrench, Airfield Operations Manager, said: “Graham has been an integral part of the airport team. His work ethic and commitment to Teesside Airport have been outstanding – nothing is ever too much trouble and he will be hugely missed.”
